The Helper
So far in our study of the book of Acts during our Wednesday night class, I’ve been really encouraged. We’ve only covered the first two chapters, but reading about the power of the Holy Spirit has both encouraged and strengthened me.
We all know what takes place within those first two chapters: the promised Holy Spirit, how the Holy Spirit is poured out on the apostles, Peter’s bold proclamation of the gospel of Jesus as Christ crucified and his resurrection, and the response of so many to become part of what we have now… the church. Think about this: The Holy Spirit working within these moments of Acts and throughout the whole Bible is the same Holy Spirit we have today as obedient followers of Jesus Christ. This may be something we understand, but I think it’s something important that we reflect deeply about.
We may not be able to perform miracles, speak in tongues, heal the sick, etc. as the apostles could with the outpouring of the Spirit, but we have the more excellent way: Faith, Hope, and Love (1 Corinthians 12-13). The Holy Spirit gives us a deeper faith, a deeper hope, and a deeper love for God and love for each other.
2 Timothy 1:7 says, “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self control.”
