The Greatest Competition

Competition is defined as a rivalry or contest between two or more individuals, groups, or businesses striving for the same goal, prize, or limited resource. Competition pushes us to perform at our best, improve, innovate, and grow. We see it in sports, in the workplace, and even throughout nature.

Competition is something I have always loved. Much of my life has revolved around sports — from basketball and baseball to now playing golf. Even outside of sports, I sometimes find myself competing at work, trying to finish a task before my coworkers. There is something about the feeling of winning that has always motivated me.

However, as I have gotten older, I have learned that even when I don’t win, there are still valuable lessons to be found. Competition teaches us perseverance, discipline, humility, and the importance of continuing to grow. This brings up an important question: How are we competing in our faith and our walk with Christ?

Many of us are good at showing up and competing on Sunday mornings. We worship, we listen, and we encourage one another. But what happens Monday through Saturday? Our faith is not a one-day competition. As Christians, we are called to pursue Christ every day. The competition we face is not against other people. It is a daily battle against sin, temptation, distractions, and the things that pull us away from God. We are striving toward a prize that is far greater than anything this world can offer — an eternal reward with Christ.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NKJV):

"Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things... Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown."

The athletes of this world train for trophies, medals, and accomplishments that eventually fade away. But as followers of Christ, we are running for something eternal.

So the question is not whether we are competing — we all are. The question is: What are we competing for? Are we giving our best effort to grow closer to God? Are we disciplining ourselves through prayer, studying His Word, serving others, and living out our faith every day?

Let us fix our eyes on the prize that truly matters—the imperishable crown found in Christ.
