The Great Physician

(Mat. 15:30-31), "Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus' feet, and He healed them. So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel."

There will be many times during our lives that most will need to see a doctor. Having men and women trained to provide medical care is a great blessing to our lives. In real life, sometimes it takes a long time for doctors to determine the exact cause of an ailment. Then sometimes they have limited responses available to them. Any cures through drugs, surgery or whatever, can take days, weeks, months or even years to heal. Often their actions are just an aid to the healing the body does for itself.

How different was the Great Physician! The gospel accounts show us the power of Jesus. He did not run tests. He did not get medical histories. He did not give pills to take home so that maybe in a few weeks they would get well. He healed them!

“Now we see that our Savior may be compared to a physician: He comes to us in our need; He makes a perfect diagnosis; He provides a final and complete cure; and He pays the bill! What a physician.” (Warren Wiersbe)

However, we need to remember that healing the physical ills of humanity was not why the Savior came.

  • "For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost. " Mat. 18:11

  • "For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them." Luke 9:56

  • "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:17

  • “I have come that they may have life, and ... have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

  • "... she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." Mat. 1:21

  • "For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and walk'? "But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins" --then He said to the paralytic, "Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house." Mat. 9:5
